The Practical Driving Test

To Apply For a Provisional Driving Licence
Either apply online or pick up a D1 Application form from your local Post Office. You will need a D1 Application form. This can be picked up at the Post Office. Once you have filled it in you need to post it along with two passport style photographs, the correct I. D. and a payment of £50 to the DVLA Swansea. Full instructions will be included with the form.

How many Lessons Will You Need
It is said that most people need 1.5 hours driving tuition multiplied by their age in order to pass the practical test. So if you are 20 years old that is 20 x 1.5 which equals 30 hours driving tuition.

The Practical Test
This usually lasts 35 to 40 minutes. The examiner will be looking to see you have a good understanding of the Highway code and have the ability to drive safely on various types of roads and traffic conditions.

You will be required to perform two reversing manoeuvres - either a parallel par, a bay park or a turn in the road. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

To pass the practical driving test, you must not commit more than 15 minor driving faults or any dangerous or serious driving faults.

Independent Driving
For about 10 minutes during your test you'll have to drive by either following a series of directions, traffic signs, or a combination of both. The examiner may show you a diagram to help you understand where you'll be going. It doesn't matter if you don't remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way.

The purpose is rather to assess your ability to drive safely whilst at the same time having to make your own decisions in order to reach your target destination. This includes for example deciding when it's safe to pull over and ask for directions.

Your result will not be affected unless you commit a driving fault, even if you go off the independent driving route. Sat navs are not allowed for this part of the test.

The cost of taking the practical test is £62 if taken on a week day and £75 if taken over the weekend.
